How Reddit Karma Actually Works

Reddit has two types of karma: post karma (from upvotes on your posts) and comment karma (from upvotes on your comments). Most subreddits check combined karma — the sum of both. One upvote ≈ 1 karma, but Reddit fuzzes the count to fight spam bots. Going negative locks you out of many subs.

What Karma Gates Control

Comment in most subs — 0-50 combined karma
Post in most subs — 10-100 combined karma
Post in large defaults — 100-500+ combined karma
Bypass auto-mod spam filter — 100-200+ combined karma
No 10-minute post cooldown — 10+ combined karma
Create a subreddit — 50+ combined karma
Send DMs/chat requests — ~7 days account age + some karma

Day 1: Comment on Rising (10 comments → 100 karma)

This is the single most important technique. Sort by Rising (not Hot, not New). Comments on Rising posts get seen before the post blows up. Sort Hot and you're lost in the noise.

The formula: be first, be useful. The first 3-5 quality comments on a Rising post can each get 50-500 upvotes. Answer the question directly in the first line, then add context or a personal anecdote. If it's a joke post, riff on the joke.

Day 2: Post in Casual Subs (→ 200 karma)

Once you have 50+ karma from comments, try posting in low-restriction subreddits. From r/NewToReddit's official list of new-user-friendly subs:

r/aww — very low restrictions, cute animals get easy upvotes
r/CasualConversation — low restrictions, text posts welcome

Day 5-7: Authority Content + Full Access

By day 7 you'll have 1000+ combined karma and full access. Now you can crosspost, bypass all auto-mod filters, and post in any subreddit.

Deadly Sins

❌ Posting in r/FreeKarma — many subs auto-ban users with this history
❌ Link dropping — posting your own links = permanent shadowban
❌ Same IP, multiple accounts — sitewide ban for vote manipulation
❌ Copypasta / reposting — instant suspicion
❌ Emoji usage — Reddit hates emojis, use emoticons :) instead
❌ Asking for upvotes — vote manipulation, sitewide rule violation
❌ VPN while browsing — Reddit flags shared IPs aggressively

The Meta Play

The real play isn't gaming Reddit — it's being so useful that Reddit promotes you.

1. Master Reddit by understanding karma mechanics inside out. 2. Create infographics and how-to guides (this playbook is an example). 3. Post them on Yap as behind-the-scenes content. 4.
